Chocolate Milk & Charcoal
Thanksgiving day started out quite normal for us with my mom and me finishing up our cooking and then my family cramming into our van and heading to my aunt’s home for the festivities. We spent the day laughing, talking, watching football, and of course, filling our faces with good food.
The normalcy came to a halt, though, when my youngest son managed to sneak into my uncle’s room and get prescription medicine bottles open (I’m not a bad mom, I promise). If you’re a parent, you can imagine my terror when I walked into this room with pills all over the floor.
Not knowing what he’d taken (he’s too young to tell us), we rushed to the ER. Everything turned out fine, either because he didn’t eat the medicine, or the chocolate milk flavored charcoal absorbed it all. I guess we’ll never know.
I guess for me, sitting in the ER and realizing everything was going to be fine made me more thankful than ever. This feeling was magnified when a family right across the hall lost their adult (but young) daughter/sister/friend. I’m really, really blessed and I’m not sure why but I’m also really thankful. Hopefully, this Thanksgiving memory will keep me that way.
